Guttering in Henley-on-thames

Guttering is an essential element of the roofing of your property. It provides visual benefits as well as ensuring that rainwater that runs off your roof is properly channeled from the edge of the building and into drains. The key to selecting the best guttering for your home is understanding the needs of your existing roof. For instance, steeper or larger sized roofs will require guttering able to channel an increased flow of water. It might be appealing to simply replace like for like, but a professional guttering company will be able to survey the house to understand your requirements, and advise you on the best guttering for your roof. Guttering is available in a range of types and materials. For materials, PVC is typically the most popular. PVC guttering is very economical while still being resilient. It's available in an array of colours and styles. However, guttering is also manufactured from metal, generally either steel, aluminium or cast iron. While these materials are normally more costly than PVC, they also last longer and are suitable for period properties as they have a more traditional appearance. Different moulds of guttering will also impact the flow of the water. Half round and square guttering are widespread and suit many buildings, while deep flow or ogee guttering are suited to use on buildings that demand increased water flow. Ogee guttering also has a unique mould which has an impressive appearance. Guttering is also available in a variety of colours, from traditional black or white to brown and grey. In addition, some PVC guttering can be purchased in a cast iron effect.

Henley-on-thames

Henley-on-Thames is a town and civil parish on the River Thames in the English county of Oxfordshire. It lies about 7 miles (11 kilometres) northeast of Reading and 7 miles west of Maidenhead. One of its borders has the tripoint of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. It covers an area of around 2.15 square miles. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11619 people. The first record of Henley is from 1179, when it is documented that King Henry II 'had obtained land for the making of structures'. King John gave the manor of Benson and the town and manor of Henley to Robert Harcourt in 1199. The existing Thursday market, it is thought, was approved by a charter of King John. A market was certainly in existence by 1269, even though the jurors of the assize of 1284 asserted to not know by what warrant the earl of Cornwall held a market and fair in the town of Henley. The existing Corpus Christi fair was approved by a charter of Henry VI. Henley is a world-renowned centre for rowing. Each summer, the yearly Henley Royal Regatta is hosted on Henley Reach, which is a naturally straight stretch of the river just north of the town. It was extended synthetically. The gathering came to be 'Royal' in 1851, when Prince Albert was patron of the regatta. The River and Rowing Museum, situated in Mill Meadows, is the town's one museum. It was developed in 1998, and officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The museum, created by the architect David Chipperfield, includes facts on the River Thames, the sport of rowing, and the town of Henley itself. For all of your house makeovers, make certain to find respected specialists in Henley-on-Thames to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

    What is a gutter?

A gutter is part of the system that takes rainwater away from a building. Every home will have some form of guttering system to stop water from dripping off the roof and into the walls. It’s important to keep your gutters clear because if water starts to seep into your home’s walls, you’re likely to get damp.

A guttering system consists of half pipes, troughs, bends and downpipes. They’re usually cylindrical in shape but they may be square on some homes and in countries outside of the UK. Technically, the gutter is the part that you’ll see across your roof that collects rainwater. The water will then feed into a downpipe from your roof’s edge to the base of your home, where you can collect it in something like a water butt, or it will be discharged to a surface water drain or soakaway.

In early times, gutters used to be made from lined wood or stone. Lead was often used as the liner to stop rainwater from seeping through the material, but you won’t see it used much anymore. These days, most homes have uPVC guttering as it’s a hardwearing plastic that should last a long time. But you’ll also see gutters made from aluminium, cast iron and copper, especially on period homes or those in a conservation area.

Every home needs a guttering system to ensure that rainwater doesn’t affect the foundations of the property. It’s also important to keep the gutters clear of debris like fallen leaves, as this will cause them to overflow, potentially causing water to soak into the walls and causing damp.

Is it easy to replace gutters?

If you live in an average home with an average amount of guttering and you’re used to a bit of DIY, it’s relatively easy to replace gutters. But if you have a home that’s more than two-storey or you have guttering that’s more complicated, it’s best left to the professionals.

Lots of homes these days have uPVC guttering. uPVC is a hard-wearing plastic that will last a long time without much maintenance except your usual gutter clearing. It’s relatively light, so lots of people think it’s easy to replace uPVC gutters. If you live in a bungalow, you may be able to just use a ladder to take down your old guttering and replace it with new uPVC gutters, but if you live in a two-storey home it can be a bit more complicated. If you do attempt to replace your gutters yourself, make sure you’ve got a sturdy ladder that will comfortably reach the right height, and never rest it on the fascia or the guttering itself.

If you have cast iron or copper guttering, this is much heavier and bulkier than uPVC. Certainly don’t try to replace these on your own – make sure you have another competent DIYer to help you. Reputable roofline specialists will use scaffold towers to make it easier to handle heavy gutters and they will always work in pairs on this type of guttering, so make sure you have the right tools and equipment to work with.

Just because it’s easy to replace gutters, it doesn’t mean you should. It’s better to ask a reliable roofline company to help you, since they have the skills to fit guttering properly and have experience with working at height.

How much do copper gutters cost?
Copper gutters are expensive – there's no doubt about it. But the look it can give a property might be just what you’re after. uPVC guttering doesn’t suit every home, and while it’s the cheapest option, some properties might not even be able to have it – for example, if you live in a conservation area or listed building. So if you’re going to have them installed, how much do copper gutters cost? Prices start at £18 per linear metre for half-round copper guttering. If you add all the bits you’ll need to go with them, like brackets and clips, you could be looking at around £40 per metre. That’s about double the cost of a uPVC or aluminium guttering system and about the same as cast iron guttering. Add in the installation costs and the average cost of a copper guttering system is £2,390. But copper gutters have a look that can’t be replicated by any other material, so if your home will suit them it might be worth the investment. It might be tempting to try to install copper guttering yourself, especially if you’re used to doing DIY. But copper guttering can be quite heavy to handle and is more fragile than uPVC, so it’s best leaving it to the professionals. On two-storey homes, roofline specialists would probably use scaffold towers to help them keep stable while they install the guttering, and will work in pairs. Since they carry out copper gutter installations all the time, they’ll be used to handling it and ensuring that they don’t scratch or damage this expensive product. So while it might seem cheaper to do it yourself, it won’t if you damage your copper gutters and have to fork out for new ones.
    How do you replace gutters?
The best way to replace gutters is to ask a reputable installer to do it for you. They have all the right safety equipment and knowledge to do it. But if you’re a competent DIYer, you could have a go at replacing the gutters yourself. If you do, you could save yourself an average of £359 on labour costs. The biggest risk from replacing guttering yourself is the height. Even if you’re on a secure ladder, if you’re not used to working at height you could seriously hurt yourself. If your home is a bungalow, the risk is lower, but anything two storeys and above carries significant risk. If you’re still happy to go ahead, there are a few things you’ll need to fit gutters yourself:
    • A sturdy ladder
    • Gloves and safety goggles
    • A hammer and nails to secure your fascia so it doesn’t fall down mid-replacement
    • A hacksaw – this will cut through uPVC guttering – just make sure you leave a margin of error with every cut you make
    • Cable ties or rope to secure the existing gutters while you dismantle them, so they don’t fall off
    • All the right fixings and brackets to secure the guttering
    • An electric drill and/or screwdrivers
Once you’ve removed the old guttering, you can get started with the new ones. Follow these steps:
    1. Add a gutter bracket to the top of the fascia board at the opposite end to the stop-end outlet, if you have one. Then tie a piece of string around the base of the bracket.
    2. You’ll need to place the gutter outlet accurately over the drain. Hold a plumb line against the fascia directly over the drain, and mark that position with a pencil. Following the manufacturer’s advice on the number of screws to use, fit the gutter outlet no more than 50mm below the level of the roof tiles.
    3. Stretch the piece of string you tied on the bracket along the fascia board, and tie it to the outlet. Make sure you check with a spirit level that the string slopes towards the outlet.
    4. Mark the positions of the other brackets. They should be no more than 800mm apart, or 600mm if your roof is very steep. They also shouldn’t be any more than 150mm from a joint or fitting. Then fit the rest of the brackets.
    5. Fit a stop-end to the first length of gutter and clip it into position on the brackets. At the other end, fit a union piece and screw it into the fascia.
    6. Then fit the next length of gutter into it, and the next until you’re finished. Cut the last one to fit using your hacksaw before attaching a stop-end. Then make sure all the joints line up with the insertion depth marks on the fittings. Then you’re done!
