Over 35 coaches passed through the town daily at the town's peak. With a population of 20250, Hoddesdon is predominantly a commuter belt town. The High Street is the home of a range of national and regional shops, fast food restaurants and clubs, along with estate agents, charity shops, banks, travel agents and a library. After the removal of the High Street's pedestrianised nature in 2009, the town has experienced a surge in popularity, leaving the empty shop numbers extremely low. Numerous new independent businesses have actually also established themselves in the High Street. The lakes and water pits remaining after the drop-off of gravel extraction in the 1970s are presently used as leisure amenities. The town is also home to a Non-League football club, Hoddesdon Town F.C., which is based at Lowfield.
