Shildon's earliest inhabitants were teams of people who lived during the Mesolithic duration some 6,000 years earlier. They obeyed accumulating wild plants and hunting wild pets. There was a small ancient flint tool discovered in the Brusselton area which might have been of this day. The Shildon area owes much of its development to the increase of the East Durham coalfields in the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th as well as early 19th century. The expansion of coal mining during the Industrial Revolution implied the conventional method of moving the coal along horse-drawn wagon methods was insufficient. Steam engines were presented. At initial fixed engines drew the wagons, but were replaced by relocating engines on trains. Shildon is thought about to be the 'cradle of the trains'. The town grew when the Stockton and Darlington Railway established its workshops in 1825. Steam locomotives such as the Sans Pareil and Royal George were constructed there. By 1855, it was a huge facility of workshops and also various other structures. After the 2nd Globe War, Shildon had among the largest home sidings complexes in Europe. The Shildon Functions ultimately closed in 1984. The site currently houses Shildon Locomotion Museum, which opened up in September 2004 and also is an extension of the National Railway Museum.
