The analysis may consist of soil examples, figuring out the most popular grass type, the turf thickness as well as colouration of your lawn.

Depending upon the type of treatment option needed, the technique of application varies.

Some treatment options, such as grass feed as well as fungicides are sprayed onto grass, taking care to cover damaged and wanted areas. After these treatments options have actually been used its recommended that turf isn't watered later on, ideally for a couple of days, to enable the products to permeate the grass.

  1. Scarification and also aeration are hands-on work, entailing literally manoeuvring specialist devices across the turf to break up and eliminate thatch that hinders turf growth. Some clean-up may be required afterwards to remove unwanted thatch as well as soil plugs.
  2. Topdressing is also a hands-on procedure, layering an organic combination of composted materials across the lawn to include nutrients, adhered to by brushing or raking into the ground to make certain penetration.
  3. Nematodes are also applied through a splashing process, but as they are living organisms, numerous experts recommend sprinkling the turf prior to their application to make sure that there is enough moisture in the dirt for them to penetrate the ground and grow.
  4. Overseeding - To prepare a lawn for overseeding, it's recommended that the area is either raked before application if there is little thatch, or scarification may be needed for even more neglected grass-- This will certainly permit the turf seeds better contact with the dirt, enabling more successful germination. As soon as the lawn prepares, overseeding does not require equipment; rather, the items can be hand planted right into the preferred locations.

How Much Do Turf Treatment Options Cost in Bingley?

There are a variety of treatments available for lawns that can help improve their appearance, health and also sturdiness depending upon your requirements-- Several of which appropriate for home do it yourself application, and also others that will certainly need a competent professional to finish.

On average, basic turf treatments costs begin at around £130 for fundamental service a small (50m2) turf, approximately around £200 for more labour-intensive and time-consuming solutions in bigger turf areas, but remember that the price of turf treatments options are influenced by a couple of variables, such as the intensity of the concern being addressed, your location within the UK, the dimension of the grass being dealt with and also who will be offering the treatment service.

  • Unwanted weeds on grass: Surprisingly, some weeds can be quite eye-catching yet in spite of their appearance, they need to be eliminated before your turf suffers. They need nutrients as well as water to grow as well as obtain these by stealing from your grass, creating damage to your lawn. Weeds are really typical however with the correct treatments they can be a distant memory.
  • Insects: Frustratingly, lawn bugs can be really usual and create damages to your lawn if left untreated. Common pests include leather jackets, ants, moles, worms and chafer grubs.
  • Moss: Moss is really common, normally shows up when turfs are trimmed too brief and enjoys protected, damp areas. Can be successfully eliminated with raking.
  • Grass illness: There are many types of grass disease that not only impact the look of grass however can trigger damage to the origins and also the blades of grass themselves. Usual types include fairy rings (a fungal condition), leaf blight and also corrosion disease.
  • Dry areas: During summer season when warmer climate prevails, grass can dry creating patches of discoloured, dying turf. Regular watering is a should especially when there has been no rain for some time.
  • Mushrooms: Although you may not want mushrooms growing in your garden, they are actually a clear indicator of a natural, healthy and balanced turf. The drawback to mushrooms is that they can be harmful to people as well as pets therefore selecting or trimming to eliminate them is a good suggestion, particularly if you have kids and also pet dogs.

FAQs

When should I scarify my lawn?

Scarification is the name given to the process where you remove excess thatch and moss from your lawn to encourage it to grow and look healthy. Although it sounds difficult, it’s actually pretty easy – simply grab a sturdy rake and apply moderate pressure to rake out moss, thatch and dead grass. Then collect it up and add to your compost heap if you have one. You can also use a petrol or electric rake, but you just want to tease out the moss and thatch. Don’t be tempted to go deep into the grass, as this could damage your lawn. So when should you scarify your lawn? The experts say that the best time is in the autumn, when the grass is actively growing and it’s not too hot, cold or dry. Most of summer’s weed seeds will have gone, so you won’t encourage weeds to grow in the raked-up soil. This soil also makes an ideal seed bed for over seeding with new grass seed, so that’s why you don’t want to get weeds in there as well. However, you may also carry out light scarification in the spring – usually around April. Make sure you don’t go too far though – as you will end up with a rather disfigured lawn if you scarify too heavily and the dryness of summer stops the lawn from recovering. It’s also best to scarify your lawn in the spring if the following apply:

  • If you couldn’t do it the previous autumn – if you keep putting it off, you might end up with extreme moss and weed growth
  • If your lawn is shaded – these areas will thin over winter and start to thicken from spring onwards, so if you scarify in the autumn you’ll make your lawn even thinner.
  • If your lawn is under trees – pair the shade from the trees with the fall of leaves in the autumn and your grass won’t be healthy, but in the spring the trees are bare, allowing lots of light onto your lawn to help it grow.
How to edge a lawn?

If your lawn edges are overgrown, it can make an otherwise well-cared for lawn look unsightly. Luckily, it’s easy to edge your lawn and make it look beautiful again. You should edge your lawn every spring and trim any overhanging grass you notice after mowing. How to edge a lawn There are different types of equipment you can use for different types of edging:

  • Edging shears
  • Half-moon edger
  • Grass shears with a long handle
  • Gardening knife
  • Long rope or a plank of wood

Depending on how regularly you’ve maintained the edging of your lawn, you might want to do one of the following things:

  • Annually in spring or if you’ve left the grass to get out of hand: Decide whether you want a straight or a curved edge along your lawn. If you want a straight edge, lay a plank of wood along the edge and use your half-moon edger to cut along. If you want a curve, lay a rope along the edge and cut along that. Or if you can still see the existing curve of the lawn, you can stick with that.
  • After mowing: Use long-handled shears to trim the grass the mower couldn’t reach. If you want to make it look extra tidy, collect up the cuttings and put them on your compost heap or dispose of them.
  • Overgrowing grass onto paths: Use a sharp gardening knife to cut the pieces of turf that are growing over the path and pull them away.
  • When your lawn is flush with the path: Snip a clean edge along your path with your long-handled grass shears to make it look neat and tidy.
  • If you’d rather a low-maintenance option: Spiked metal sheeting is a good material to use to keep your lawn’s edges at bay. Fix it in the ground along the edges to keep the outline of your lawn and stop it from growing into your borders.

The best way to keep your lawn edges looking fabulous is to keep them maintained. Remember to give them a little trim every time you mow your lawn to be the envy of all your neighbours.

Will scarifying make the lawn better?

Everyone wants a good-looking lawn! If you’re wondering the best time to scarify your lawn, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider this in order to help you make the best-informed decision possible. Let’s take a look!

The short and simple answer to this question is when your grass is actively growing. This is the best time to scarify a lawn as it enables it to recover faster once it has been scarified. What’s more? The conditions also have to be appropriate as extreme weather condition, be it too cold, too warm, too dry or too hot, will hinder the quick and proper recovery of your lawn. It’s also important to take note that scarifying of a lawn is going to leave the soil exposed which makes way for weed and other unwanted plants to grow.

During the year, there are two different times which tends to provide the most ideal conditions to scarify a lawn. The first of these periods is late March or April when the spring is in the air and your grass receives all the warmth and moisture it needs to thrive. It’s also advisable not to wait till too late in the spring as right after this period comes the heat and dryness of summer. Furthermore, the lawn shouldn’t be scarified too heavily during the spring as summer usually comes with weed seeds which means your grass won’t recover fast enough and weeds will quickly make way for themselves.

If you wish to scarify your lawn heavily, then the perfect time to do this would be in September or October – during autumn. During this period, the summer weed seeds would be gone and the grass will grow properly.

How do I aerate my lawn?

Aeration, like scarification, is another vital step to keeping your lawn looking healthy and vibrant. It involves making small holes in the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to get into the grass roots, helping them to grow deeply, and produce a much stronger lawn. It also helps to relieve compaction from the soil, which stops nutrients and air from circulating. But how do you aerate your lawn?

Before you start to aerate your lawn, it’s a good idea to scarify it first to get rid of any moss, dead grass and thatch. This involves vigorously raking your lawn to get all the organic matter up, then transferring it to your compost heap or disposing of it. Light scarification is best in the spring but you can heavily scarify it in the autumn.

If you’ve got a small lawn, you can use a hand-held hollow tine aerator or even a normal garden fork. Dig deep into your lawn’s surface with the fork, or push the aerator into the ground which will pull plugs, or cores, of soil out of the ground to create air holes. You can let the cores dry and then go over them with a lawn mower or rake to spread them evenly across your lawn. This will recycle all the nutrients in those parts of the soil and stimulate bacterial activity to break down unwanted thatch. Don’t leave them, because they will make your lawn look bumpy over time.

If you’ve got a larger lawn, you might find it easier to see if you can hire a petrol aerator. But there are also rolling aerators that have spikes on a cylinder and you just push along, or even aerator sandals that you can wear and just go to town on your grass!
