Prior to any kind of specialist treatment options starts, your lawn professional will go to the property and evaluate the lawn state to allow them to recommend the most appropriate treatments. The analysis might include dirt samples, identifying one of the most prominent lawn type, the turf density and colouration of your turf.

Relying on the sort of treatment needed, the approach of application varies.

Some treatments, such as lawn feed and also fungicides are sprayed onto grass, making sure to cover afflicted and wanted areas. After these treatments options have been applied its recommended that turf isn't sprinkled later on, preferably for a couple of days, to permit the products to permeate the turf.

  1. Scarification as well as aeration are hands-on tasks, entailing physically manoeuvring specialist tools across the lawn to separate and also get rid of thatch that impedes turf development. Some clean-up might be needed afterwards to get rid of undesirable thatch and dirt plugs.
  2. Topdressing is also a hand-operated procedure, layering an natural combination of composted materials throughout the lawn to add nutrients, followed by cleaning or raking into the ground to make sure penetration.
  3. Nematodes are likewise applied via a spraying process, but as they are living organisms, many specialists advise watering the grass before their application to make sure that there suffices wetness in the soil for them to pass through the ground and prosper.
  4. Overseeding - To prepare a grass for overseeding, it's suggested that the area is either raked prior to application if there is little thatch, or scarification may be required for more ignored turfs-- This will allow the lawn seeds greater contact with the soil, enabling even more successful germination. When the turf prepares, overseeding does not need machinery; instead, the items can be hand sown into the desired areas.

If you do not feel great mowing your turf it is feasible to employ a professional. For additional information see our guide to turf cutting prices.
  • Unwanted weeds on turf: Surprisingly, some weeds can be quite eye-catching but regardless of their look, they require to be eliminated before your lawn endures. They need nutrients as well as water to expand and also obtain these by stealing from your grass, creating damage to your grass. Weeds are extremely common yet with the appropriate treatments options they can be a thing of the past.
  • Pests: Frustratingly, turf parasites can be extremely usual as well as cause damages to your grass if left neglected. Common bugs consist of leather jackets, ants, moles, worms and also chafer grubs.
  • Moss: Moss is extremely common, normally appears when lawns are trimmed also brief and also enjoys sheltered, wet locations. Can be properly eliminated with raking.
  • Lawn disease: There are numerous sorts of lawn condition that not just impact the look of lawns yet can create damages to the origins as well as the blades of lawn themselves. Usual types consist of fairy rings (a fungal disease), leaf affliction and rust illness.
  • Dry patches: During summertime when warmer climate is common, lawns can dry causing patches of discoloured, passing away turf. Constant watering is a must specifically when there has been no rain for some time.
  • Mushrooms: Although you might not desire mushrooms growing in your garden, they are in fact a clear sign of a natural, healthy and balanced turf. The downside to mushrooms is that they can be harmful to people and pets as a result picking or mowing to eliminate them is a good suggestion, especially if you have young children and family pets.

FAQs

Will scarifying make the lawn better?

Everyone wants a good-looking lawn! If you’re wondering the best time to scarify your lawn, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider this in order to help you make the best-informed decision possible. Let’s take a look!

The short and simple answer to this question is when your grass is actively growing. This is the best time to scarify a lawn as it enables it to recover faster once it has been scarified. What’s more? The conditions also have to be appropriate as extreme weather condition, be it too cold, too warm, too dry or too hot, will hinder the quick and proper recovery of your lawn. It’s also important to take note that scarifying of a lawn is going to leave the soil exposed which makes way for weed and other unwanted plants to grow.

During the year, there are two different times which tends to provide the most ideal conditions to scarify a lawn. The first of these periods is late March or April when the spring is in the air and your grass receives all the warmth and moisture it needs to thrive. It’s also advisable not to wait till too late in the spring as right after this period comes the heat and dryness of summer. Furthermore, the lawn shouldn’t be scarified too heavily during the spring as summer usually comes with weed seeds which means your grass won’t recover fast enough and weeds will quickly make way for themselves.

If you wish to scarify your lawn heavily, then the perfect time to do this would be in September or October – during autumn. During this period, the summer weed seeds would be gone and the grass will grow properly.

How do I aerate my lawn?

Aeration, like scarification, is another vital step to keeping your lawn looking healthy and vibrant. It involves making small holes in the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to get into the grass roots, helping them to grow deeply, and produce a much stronger lawn. It also helps to relieve compaction from the soil, which stops nutrients and air from circulating. But how do you aerate your lawn?

Before you start to aerate your lawn, it’s a good idea to scarify it first to get rid of any moss, dead grass and thatch. This involves vigorously raking your lawn to get all the organic matter up, then transferring it to your compost heap or disposing of it. Light scarification is best in the spring but you can heavily scarify it in the autumn.

If you’ve got a small lawn, you can use a hand-held hollow tine aerator or even a normal garden fork. Dig deep into your lawn’s surface with the fork, or push the aerator into the ground which will pull plugs, or cores, of soil out of the ground to create air holes. You can let the cores dry and then go over them with a lawn mower or rake to spread them evenly across your lawn. This will recycle all the nutrients in those parts of the soil and stimulate bacterial activity to break down unwanted thatch. Don’t leave them, because they will make your lawn look bumpy over time.

If you’ve got a larger lawn, you might find it easier to see if you can hire a petrol aerator. But there are also rolling aerators that have spikes on a cylinder and you just push along, or even aerator sandals that you can wear and just go to town on your grass!

How can I tell if my lawn has diseases or pests?

With summer comes a lot of lawn challenges - from sod webworms, chinch bugs, nutsedge to drought stress, diseases and lots more. A lot of people find it hard to tell what’s happening to their lawn and probably assume it to be as a result of the summer stress and will definitely turn green again once the fall rolls in. This may be right in certain situations, but if you have fungi eating deep into your lawn, the green may not return. So, how exactly do you figure out if your lawn has diseases or pests? In this post, we’re going to provide you with a good insight into this to help you take the necessary treatment steps as soon as possible.

  • Fungal structures. Fungi structures are not usually the easiest to spot as they vary in shape, colour and appearance. Fortunately, most fungi that appears on lawns will possess some type of structure which can be spotted when moisture is present. Once the night time dew sets in, you’ll be able to identify these strange growths in your lawn.
  • Matted or Collapsed Areas. There is some sort of diseases that will make grass plant to wilt in little time. This, combined with fungi structures will make the grass look to have been matted in some areas.
  • Discoloured or oily areas. Some areas are likely to show symptoms more than the others. While the unaffected turf may remain in its normal state, areas that are nearby may vary in colour due to the damage to the leaf tissue.
  • Lesions or spots on leaves. Do you notice a certain damage pattern on the leaf blades of the grass plants? If yes, then your lawn is probably infected with a disease. Some of these spots may vary in size and colour.
How to level a garden and lawn?

Our gardens are often our pride and joy, so we want them to look their best. If you notice that your garden is uneven, you’ll probably want to do something about it. But how do you level your garden or lawn? A gardener can help you do this and will get the best finish, but if you want to have a go at doing it yourself there are a few steps you can take. Before you start, make sure you’ve got all the following equipment to hand:

  • String line
  • 4 rods & string
  • Tape measure
  • Flat shovel
  • Water sprinkler or watering can
  • A rake
  • Earthmoving and compacting equipment
  • Spirit level
  • 2 x 4 piece of wood
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Protective gloves and shoes

Then, you can get ready to level your garden.

  1. Mark out the area Push 4 rods into the ground around the area you want to level out in a square or rectangle. Tie your string around the rods to connect them all together, ensuring that the string stays tight. Then use your string line to any of the 4 sides to check that it’s level. You’ll then need to measure the height from the ground to the string on all four sides to check how much you would need to adjust the ground to make it level. Make sure you take note of the high and low spots and measure the difference between these spots.
  2. Water the ground to soften it If you want to level your lawn, or the part of your garden that you want to level has grass on it, you’ll need to uproot the ground underneath it. To make it easier to dig and lift out the grass, sprinkle some water over the area before you begin. It’s a good idea to do this over a few days to really soften it – but make sure you don’t do it so much that it becomes too heavy and soggy.
  3. Remove the grass Push your flat shovel into the ground, around 3-6cm deep, then slide the shovel horizontally to lift out the soil and the grass on top. As you repeat this process around the entire area, make sure you try to lift out the soil evenly to avoid making your levelling task even harder.
  4. Add soil Fill low spots with nutrient-rich soil and spread evenly over the area with a rake. If you’re levelling out a large area of your garden, consider renting earthmoving equipment to make it easier.
  5. Flatten the soil Next you’ll want to compact the soil to protect it from erosion. If you’re working on a small garden or area of your garden, simply use your feet – get stomping on that ground! You could also use a rake, but for larger gardens consider hiring a compactor. Then, leave the soil to settle for around 3 weeks before doing anything. If you’re doing this in the summer, you can water it sparingly to keep it from drying out.
  6. Adjust until you’re happy It might take you a few adjustments to get the level of your garden or lawn right. Use a spirit level along a long 2 x 4 piece of wood to see whether the ground is even, then adjust by adding a little more soil or removing soil until it’s at the level you want it.

That’s it. A gardener or landscaping company will be able to level your garden or lawn perfectly, so consider getting some quotes from local companies.
