If the attic conversion would benefit your home and you're looking for more room, do a comparison of quotes from trustworthy companies within Berkhamsted and get the best offer for the work you need completed.

Berkhamsted

Berkhamsted is a medium-sized historic market town within the western fringe of the English county of Hertfordshire. Located in the little Bulbourne Valley in the Chiltern Hills, it is now a commuter town, being 26 miles northwest of London. According to population information from 2013, the town has a permanent resident population of roughly 18,100, occupying around 7363 households. There are a variety of properties in residential locations, with 77% of household areas being houses or bungalows and 23% being flats or maisonettes. Settlements have been established in Berkhamsted for more than 500 years, as discovered by archaeological proof of flint working during the Neolithic age and metal working in the late Iron Age and Roman periods. Though farming, service and light industry were normal local occupations in 1986, the most significant employers of the town in 2015 were educational facilities and retail. Nearly all of the companies can be found in the reputable Berkhamsted West ward. In 2014, the Academy of Urbanism's Urbanism Awards described the character of Berkhamsted's High Street as 'vibrant' and 'bustling', creating a 'pleasant' and 'successful' shopping retreat. You can find a broad selection of shops and food retailers available to citizens and visitors, boasting a mix of independent and commercial chain shops, cafes, coffee shops, restaurants and public houses. For social opportunities, the Rex Cinema presents several recent movies for the people of Berkhamsted to check out. Being built in the art deco style of architecture in 1937, the Daily Telegraph has ranked the Rex as the UK's most beautiful cinema, and it was granted the description of Britain's Best Cinema in the inaugural Guardian film awards in 2014. For all your home upgrades, make sure that you choose vetted specialists in Berkhamsted to make sure that you get the very best quality service.

FAQs

do you need planning permission for a loft conversion?

Typically, loft conversions do not require planning permission except in certain situations. They’re usually covered under what’s known as Permitted Development. Certain building works like loft conversion, rear extension and conservatories are granted planning permission by local authorities. Permitted Development, however, gives you a free range to improve your home without having any issues from the councils or regulations. Before your planned loft conversion can be covered under Permitted Development, there are some certain criteria that must be met. This criteria includes the following:

✓ The extension must not go beyond the existing slope of the roof at the front of the house.

✓ The loft space converted must not go beyond 40 cubic metres in a terraced house.

✓ The roof’s height must not be increased by the extension.

✓ The loft space converted must not reach beyond 50 cubic metres in a detached or semi detached house.

✓ The plan for the extension mustn’t involve structures like balconies, verandas or anything other structures of this nature.

✓ The roof extension should be positioned as far back as possible or at least 20cm from the existing eaves.

✓ The side that faces the window openings should be at least 1.7m beyond the floor and the windows should also be obscured.

✓ The roof extension must not overhang the existing roof or wall of the house.

✓ The materials that are to be used must be similar or the same to the materials that has already been used on the house’s exterior.

However, you should bear in mind that there are some properties that are exempt from Permitted Development. Examples of these type of properties include conservation areas, Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage sites. Permitted Development does not also provide coverage for listed buildings.

What kinds of loft conversion are there?

There’s a huge range of different types of loft conversions. The most common are dormer and skylight or Velux conversions. There are also hip to gable and mansard conversions. The type of loft conversion that’s most suitable for your property will depend on the style of roof and the size of your loft.

How long will a loft conversion take?

It depends on the style and size of the conversion, but in general, a loft conversion will take between 1-2 months. A loft conversion is a substantial building project, and plans will need to be drawn up. This may add to the time it takes to complete your loft conversion.

how disruptive is a loft conversion?

Asides the questions relating to planning permission of a loft conversion as well as the total cost of completing a loft conversion project, this is perhaps the most common question on the loft conversion subject matter. Before making an investment decision, many homeowners will want to know just how disruptive a loft conversion is. Well, we’ve all heard the several horror stories when loft conversion builder with dirty boots tramples all over the fresh and just-acquired shag pile or the noise of the construction loud enough to annoy neighbours from four blocks away or an obvious shortage of teabags, sugar and lots more. Good news is, the disruption of loft conversion is not as bad as people make out. Let’s have a look at how it works!

Just like all other major building projects, a loft conversion is disruptive to your property. However, no two loft conversions are the same, therefore some are certain to be more drastic and invasive than others. In the long run, the project is worth the stress and inconveniences caused and in most cases, it’s usually a very good investment.

Normally, an average loft conversion is expected to last for about 9 to 12 weeks (depending on the complexity of the loft conversion project some might take longer). Some of the factors that affects the duration of a project includes the type of the loft, the design of the loft as well as the style of the property.

Generally, a loft conversion is a lot less disruptive than say completely moving a home. It all has to do with how you’re able to deal with it as a person. And besides, the effect it’s going to have to a large extent depends on the company you hire. A good company will always look to ensure to keep disruptions to a minimal when carrying out the loft conversion project.
