Abertillery, which translates as 'mouth of the River Tyleri', is the largest sized town of the Ebbw Fach valley in what used to be the historic county of Monmouthshire, South Wales. Statistics compiled by The Welsh Language Board (Bwrdd yr Iaith Gymraeg) in 2001 reveal that 9.9 percent of Abertillery spoke Welsh, which dropped by 2.7% in 2011 to 7.2%. Abertillery's traditional-style town centre mainly developed in the late 19th century and showcases some eye-catching Victorian architecture. Spreading out over four main streets, the town has 2 department stores and a covered Victorian arcade linking 2 of the main shopping locations.
