Alexandria is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town is located on the River Leven, 4 miles (6 km) north-west of Dumbarton. In 2001, the population of the town was 13,444. It's the biggest town inside the Vale of Leven. Alexandria developed as a consequence of the textile sector. In 1715, the first bleachfields in the area were created at Dalquhurn, attracting seasonal labour from Argyll. As trade between Scotland and the United States grew, cotton was increasingly imported and processed in and around Glasgow. Soon, textile work within the Vale grew from just bleaching fabric to dying and printing it as well. The town's traditional industries, most of all cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, have been phased out.
