Wigton
Wigton is a market community in Cumbria, England. Historically in Cumberland, it lies just outside the Lake District in the borough of Allerdale. Wigton is at the centre of the Solway Level, in between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway coast. It is served by Wigton railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line, as well as the A596 road to Workington. The community of Silloth-on-Solway exists twelve miles to the west, beyond Abbeytown. Wigton today is a thriving market town, with livestock auctions being held routinely at Hopes Auction Company. The main company is Innovia Films. The community has its very own secondary school, called The Nelson Thomlinson School, which is a well-performing comprehensive with close links to the Innovia manufacturing facility. In 2004 the community was the initial negotiation in the United Kingdom to enforce a time limit on teens under the age of 16. It was in location for two weeks, and its purpose was to reduce the quantity of vandalism in the community centre. It followed nightly vandalism projects, which included smashed store fronts, in addition to scare tactics of senior members of the area. The curfew attracted national interest, with the neighborhood high school receiving check outs from companies such as Sky News. It had some impact, with less criminal damage occurring since.
