Laurencekirk

Laurencekirk is a small town in the historic county of Kincardineshire, Scotland, simply off the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen main road, which bypassed it in 1985. It is provided as part of Aberdeenshire. It is the largest settlement in the Howe o' the Mearns location and also houses the regional senior high school; Mearns Academy, which was granted the Charter Mark in 2003. Its old name was Conveth, an anglification of the Gaelic Coinmheadh, describing a responsibility to give free food and board to passing troops. Laurencekirk is in the valley in between the Hill of Garvock and also the Cairn O' Mount. The famous landmark of the Johnston Tower can be seen on the top of the Garvock. Laurencekirk was, in the past, known for making snuff boxes with a special kind of closed joint (referred to as a "Laurencekirk joint") designed by James Sandy. Laurencekirk Golf Club (currently defunct) first appeared in the early 1900s. The club shut at the time of WW2. Lewis Grassic Gibbon created much regarding The Mearns as well as the bordering location in his publication Sunset Song. A homage centre can be checked out at Arbuthnott a few miles from Laurencekirk. Fred Urquhart serviced the land at Laurencekirk in the 2nd World War, as well as his short stories make use of his observations of rural life here.

    FAQs

how to replace flat roof felt?

How To Replace Flat Roof Felt

Also referred to as tar paper, roofing felt is installed underneath the roof’s shingles to help deny water access to your home. Installing the roofing felt in overlapping layers builds a water barrier in situations whereby the weather damages or blows away the shingles. Although the application of a roofing felt on a flat roof is relatively easier and safer than working on a peaked roof, it’s advisable to take enough care and precautions. If you lack proper training and experience for this task, we’d recommend you employ a reliable professional to guarantee the best results and save you from further headaches especially in cases whereby unfortunate errors are made. This step by step guide will give you a good insight into the flat roof felt replacement process.

    • Take a measurement of the width and length of the roof.

    • Calculate the square footage by multiplying the numbers.

    • Multiply the square footage gotten by three (it’s advisable to install three layers of roofing felt to create a really strong weather barrier).

    • Use a claw hammer to remove the existing roofing felt.

    • Use utility knife to cut the new felt to fit the length of the roof.

    • Place the first piece along the roof’s edge and use a hammer tacker to tack the felt in place with staples or galvanized nails and hammer.

    • Put the staples or nails at every 6 inches along the side touching the roof’s edge as well as down the short sides.

    • Repeat the same process for the second piece, laying it out beside the first row of felt.

    • Cut a piece of felt to the appropriate length using a utility knife to begin the second layer of roofing felt, and cutting it in half, lengthwise.

    • Apply construction adhesive along the first row using a trowel.

    • Press the first piece for the second layer onto the adhesive. Repeat this process until the roof is covered with a second layer

    • Apply construction adhesive over the second layer to install the third layer. Begin with a full piece of felt without cutting it in half.

    • Overlap each piece by 2 inches until you’ve completely installed the third layer.

how much to replace a flat roof?

How Much To Replace A Flat Roof

There’s no straight answer to this question. However, the average cost lies within the range of £1000 to £5000. This range may look too wide but the price is greatly influenced by a number of factors which is capable of making the price increase or decrease. Some of the factors affecting the cost of flat roof coverings and replacement include: the type of flat roofing system and materials you want, the area size of the flat roof in M2, the project’s location, the roofing company to be used, the ease at which to reach the roof, cost of removing the old flat roof as well as cost of removing the other waste.

Although there are many factors to be put into consideration but the most crucial factor is the size of the house or the area size of the flat roof in M2. for instance, a one bedroom apartment’s flat roof will have a price between £1500 to £3000. This is, however, with the assumption that the flat roof is going to be used as the main roof of the house. But if you’re only using it for a section of the house like your garage, the price could range between £700 to £1000

There four commonly used types of flat roof materials which includes fibreglass, felt, rubber and lead. If you need a felt roof, for example, the price is between £40 to £70 per m2. And in the same tone, a metal roof will generally cost more than a a flat roof made from rubber.

Another important factor we’ll discuss is the labour or the roofing company to be used. Different roofing companies will charge different prices. As a result, you should carefully compare the prices of the companies in order to get a great deal.

    What is overlaying?

If your existing roof is still in good condition but the membrane is getting old, it’s often not worth exposing the structure to the weather whilst the contractor strips off the old membranes. The contractor will leave them in place to act as a base layer for a new roofing system. As long as there are no other problems with your roof, then overlaying is a good way to replace your flat roof.If you have any more questions about flat roofing that aren’t listed here, fill out our form to ask a contractor.

I’ve got ponding on my roof. Do I need to replace it?

Ponding is where you see pools of water appearing on your flat roof. Unless your roof is leaking or showing other signs of damage, you don’t need to replace it. When you do have your flat roof replaced, tell the contractor so they can find out the cause of the ponding.
