Soffits & Fascias in Fort William

Fascias and soffits are a vital aspect of most guttering systems. Not only do they provide support for the guttering itself, they improve the design of your house by producing a clean and neat finish to the roofline. Fascias or fascia boards are horizontal planks that sit on the edge of the rafters of your roof, closing the end of the roof and creating the support that the guttering is fixed to. Soffits run under the fascia boards, closing the gap and protecting the underside of the rafter ends. Soffits are often ventilated to enable the roofing timbers to breathe and to prevent any moisture accumulation. Box ends are utilised where the horizontal fascia meets the diagonal barge board that runs up the edge of the roof profile, giving a neat finish to an otherwise ugly join.

Fascias and soffits are generally produced from either wood or UPVC. Wood fascias and soffits are typical on older properties and continue to be popular. However, wooden fascias and soffits can rot as time passes and expose the rest of the guttering to issues or leaks. Recently, UPVC fascias and soffits have been increasingly popular as they provide a durable choice that will not rot. UPVC fascias and soffits can be purchased in an array of colours to fit any house, although white is very popular as it provides a traditional appearance. Fascias are additionally available in ogee moulded designs, where feature grooves are included. These can have an impressive effect.

Fort William

Fort William is a settlement in the Highlands of Scotland. Initially formed on the still-extant village of Inverlochy, the town is found at the southern edge of the Great Glen, Fort William is found beside the head of Loch Linnhe, one of Scotland's longest sea lochs, next to the mouth of the rivers Nevis and Lochy. It is near to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, Glen Nevis and the town of Achnaphubuil is on the opposite shore of the loch. When the railway opened to Fort William on 7 August 1894, the station was bestowed prime position at the south side of the town. The outcome was that the town was divided from the lochside by railway tracks prior to the 1970s when the present by-pass was constructed, and the station was re-located to the north end. According to the 2001 Census, it has a permanent resident population of around 9908. This makes Fort William the 2nd largest settlement in the Highlands of Scotland and the largest town: only the city of Inverness is larger. Within this population, around 726 people, making up 7.33 per cent of the population, can speak Gaelic. Fort William is a leading tourist centre, with Glen Coe just to the south, Aonach Mòr to the east and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is a hub for hillwalking and climbing thanks to its vicinity to Ben Nevis and several other Munro mountains. It is additionally known for its surrounding downhill trail bike track. It is the start and end of both the West Highland Way (Milngavie-Fort William) and the Great Glen Way (a walk/cycle way Fort William-Inverness). FAQs

When should I replace my soffits and fascias?

You should replace your soffits and fascias if you are having problems. Soffits and fascias can degrade and rot away over time, and this can cause leaks, faulty guttering, or even allow pests entry to the roof space. If any of these problems occur, you should speak to an experienced roofline company to discuss replacing your soffits and fascias.

how much to replace soffit and fascia?

It may be shocking a whole lot of people would not be able to point out fascias and soffits on a building despite the fact that they’re an essential part of the roof. To give you an idea, they’re simply used to cover the roof beams’ ends that comes out of the wall from underneath of the roof. The board that runs vertically just below the roofline is the fascia board, which is also the long length of UPVC. Therefore if you look at the gutters located in the front of house, the board behind is called the fascia board. However, soffits runs horizontally from behind the gutters to the wall of a building, so if you walk close to a house and look up, you’ll identify the soffits. They’re done to cover the gaps between the wall house and the gutters. The main function of both soffit and fascia is to divert water away from your roof as well as walls.

Fascias and soffits were usually made of wood before UPVC came along. And as a result, they only require little maintenance, no more warping, painting or cracks unlike the wooden ones. However they also can’t last an eternity, so when the time comes and you need to replace your soffit and fascia, you’ll probably want to know just how much it’s going to cost.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to calculate an accurate cost for fascias and soffits as there are too many variables to put into consideration. These includes the type of fascia and soffit you choose as well as the size of your property. However the average cost to replace a three bed semi-detached house’s fascias and soffits is within the range of £1200 to £1500 or even more if you’re staying in London or in a larger detached building.

What colour should soffits and fascias be?

Soffits and fascias are available in lots of different colours. These include black, grey, brown, white and cream. It’s also possible to get them in brighter colours like reds, blues and greens.

What colour soffits and fascias you get is entirely up to you, unless you live in a listed building, in which case some rules may apply. Most people choose a colour that matches their roof, walls or window frames to give their property an attractive, colour-coordinated look.

What are soffits and fascias?

Soffits and fascias sit along the sides of your property, over the join between your walls and your roof. The fascia attaches to the end of your roof rafters, hiding and protecting them. The soffit fixes on the bottom of the fascia, bridging the gap between your fascia and wall. Your guttering attaches to the fascia, which also joins to the bargeboard on your gable end, if you have one.
