North Berwick
North Berwick is a seaside community and former royal burgh in East Lothian, Scotland. It is located on the south coast of the Firth of Forth, approximately 20 miles (32 km) east-northeast of Edinburgh. North Berwick came to be a stylish holiday resort in the 19th century due to its two sandy bays, the East (or Milsey) Bay and also the West Bay, as well as continues to attract holidaymakers. Golf courses at the ends of each bay are open to visitors. The size and population of the community remained fairly consistent until the 1970s, at which point housebuilding started in earnest around the periphery of the town, initially to the south (1950s-- 70s), after that a collection of significant expansions to the west (1980s-present) along the line of the train. There is talk of additional developments focussing on "budget friendly housing" on the south side of the community. While the population may not have truly "took off", house costs have. North Berwick regularly appears on top of nationwide residence cost surveys, and like-for-like prices approach Edinburgh. North Berwick was listed as one of the most expensive seaside community in Scotland in 2006, and was second to St. Andrews in 2009.
