Oakham
Oakham is an old English market town in Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is situated to the west of Rutland Water, which is one of the most vast man-made lakes in Europe. It is home to All Saints' Church, founded in the 14th Century, and Oakham Castle, which was built in the 12th Century. Only the great hall of the castle is still noticeable, and it is a valued tourist attraction in the area.
Every Wednesday and Saturday in Oakham there is a market where a number of local goods are on sale. Every third Saturday there is a farmer's market on Gaol Street, where local farmers sell their produce.
An interesting landmark in Oakham is the Oakham Signal Box, which Airfix used as a mould for all their model rail kits. Another custom that the town has is hanging horseshoes in the great hall of the castle. When a member of royalty or peer of the realm passed through Oakham, they had to pay a fee in the form of a horseshoe. The horseshoes hang upside-down which is widely seen to be unlucky, but in Oakham this was to stop the Devil from sitting in the hollow.
