Bellshill
Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It's located 10 miles to the south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles west of Edinburgh, as well as being in close proximity to other towns such as Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it's been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of roughly 20,000, a report by the Halifax Building Society suggested that in the early part of 2005, the town was the UK's property hot spot, seeing a rise in home prices by 46%. This resulted in the typical home price as being around £105,000. It is believed that the town dates from the 17th century, which originally contained a row of quarry workers' houses owned by Mr. Bell, the proprietor of a stone quarry towards the south of the town. The development of Bellshill, nonetheless, largely occurred just after the quarry shutting at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Improvement work has continued all through the twentieth century. Recently, the Streetscape Project, a programme which aims to attain the town's regeneration and to modernise the the town centre, occurred between 2007 and 2010. This made a one way system around the main street making the area more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised specifically for producing respected and influential popular music, with bands such as the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub hailing from the town. A Channel 4 television series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, commonly referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
