Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is located south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Documented as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town originates from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land in part or fully surrounded by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and well established history as a production and trading town. The town received a charter to host a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be convened at the Manor of Elland and at 2 fairs throughout the year. The town quickly ended up being a prime spot for wool production, and its downturn in the 20th century had an extensive effect on the population, with many mills being converted to homes, if they were not demolished. Quarried near to the town after the establishment of the canal, resilient flagstones were transported economically across the country. Elland was the home to the main factory of the manufacturer of Gannex products and it is at present the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which manufactures a series of old-school kinds of boiled sweets. Suma Wholefoods has actually been located in the town since 2001, which is the largest worker's co-operative. A range of landmarks are also found in the region, featuring St. Mary the Virgin parish church, the Old Town Hall and Southgate Methodist Church. For all your home upgrades, make sure to make use of trustworthy contractors in Elland to make certain of quality.
