Romney Marsh

Romney Marsh is a sparsely inhabited marsh area in the counties of Kent and also East Sussex in the south-east of England. It covers concerning 100 square miles (260 km2). A selecting ward in the same name exists. This ward had a population of 2,358 at the 2011 census. The Romney Marsh has actually been progressively built up over the centuries. One of the most substantial function of the Marsh is the Rhee Wall (Rhee is a word for river), forming a popular ridge. This function was extended as a river in three stages from Appledore to New Romney in the 13th century. Sluices regulated the circulation of water, which was then released to flush silt from the harbour at New Romney. Eventually, the fight was lost; the harbour silted up as well as New Romney declined in relevance. The Rhee kept part of the old port open until the 15th century. The wall at Dymchurch was built around the very same time; tornados had actually breached the tile barrier, which had shielded it up until that time. It is an usual false impression that both these frameworks were built by the Romans. In 1250 as well as in the complying with years, a series of violent storms broke through the seaside shingle financial institutions, flooding considerable areas and also returning it to marsh, as well as ruining the harbour at New Romney. In 1287 water destroyed the port town of Old Winchelsea (now located some 2 mi (3 km) out in Rye bay), which had actually been under threat from the sea given that a minimum of 1236. Winchelsea, the third biggest port in England as well as a major importer of a glass of wine, was relocated on greater land, with a harbour consisting of 82 docks. Those same tornados, nevertheless, aided to build up much more shingle: such coastlines currently ran along practically the whole seaward side of the marshland. By the 14th century, much of the Walland and Denge Marshes had been redeemed by "innings", the procedure of throwing up an embankment around the sea-marsh as well as making use of the low-tide to let it run dry using one-way drains pipes established right into the brand-new seawall, running right into a network of dykes called locally "drains" in 1462, the Romney Marsh Corporation was established to set up drain and also sea defences for the marsh, which it continued to build right into the 16th century. By the 16th century, the course of the Rother had been altered to its network today; the majority of the rest of the location had actually now been recovered from the sea. The tile remains to be deposited. Because of this, all the initial Cinque Ports of the Marsh are currently far from the sea. Dungeness Point is still being contributed to: although (especially near Dungeness and Hythe) a day-to-day operation is in place to counter the improving of the shingle banks, using watercrafts to dredge and relocate the drifting tile. The Marsh ended up being the building of the Priory of Canterbury in the 9th century, that provided the initial tenancy on the land to a guy called Baldwin, at some time between 1152 and 1167, for "as much land as Baldwin himself can confine as well as drain pipes against the sea"; Baldwin's Drain (drainage ditch) remains being used. The marsh has because ended up being covered by a thick network of water drainage ditches as well as when supported huge farming communities. These gutters are maintained as well as taken care of for sustainable water levels by the Romney Marsh Area Internal Drainage Board. Romney Marsh is adjacent to the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is much less developed than many various other areas in Kent and also Sussex. The decrease in sheep costs indicated that even the local stock (marketed all over the world for breeding for over 2 centuries) ended up being unsustainable. Turfing had constantly been a lesser technique because of the meadow maintained brief by the sheep reared upon it, yet ranches are increasing in dimension to make up for the decline in sustainable livestock farming. Some sight this as unsustainable due to the damage to dirt ecology of the Marsh. The only various other choice, considering that 1946, has actually been for farmers to look to arable farming, changing the landscape from a jumble of tiny family members farms to a few extensive arable production units.

FAQs

How long do double glazed sealed units last?
When it comes to how long double glazed sealed units (the glass inside the window) last, a lot of it is down to the quality of the glass and the environment that your windows sit in. It’s not uncommon for your window frames themselves (especially if they are uPVC) to last longer than your sealed units. Sealed units are called that because they’re two panes of glass sealed together with an air gap in between. They use what’s called a ‘perimeter seal’ to protect the air gap between the panes, and is usually made of butyl mastic which retains a desiccant within a perforated metallic spacer bar. The desiccant’s job is to absorb any moisture which finds its way into the air gap to stop your window from misting up on the inside. When a sealed unit fails, or is ‘blown’, it’s usually because moisture builds up around the seal and causes it to fail. Sealed units won’t last forever, so you will eventually end up with condensation inside the panes of your double glazing, but in an ideal environment your double glazed sealed units could last up to 30 years, with some manufacturers claiming as long as 40 years. But they do require a bit of maintenance and the position of your windows will also make a difference as to how long they last. There are a few things that determine how long a sealed unit will last:
  • Climate - If your window faces south, it will be subject to direct sunlight for a lot of the day. This tends to cause the sealed unit to fail more quickly – a south-facing window may last between 10-25 years. This is because the spacer bars will twist as the temperature rises and causes the adhesive holding them together to eventually fail.
  • Moisture - Windows in kitchens and bathrooms tend to fail more quickly because they come into contact with moisture more often. For example, if water gets on your windowsill when you shower, the seal around the glass will come loose more quickly if it’s constantly wet.
When you replace the sealed units in your windows or get completely new double glazing, make sure you choose an installer that uses quality products and will take all the steps to ensure that your sealed units are kept away from moisture as much as possible.
How to replace the glass in a uPVC window?
It’s not too difficult to replace the glass in a uPVC window, so if you’re a confident DIYer you could have a go at this yourself. We’ll go through the main steps on how to replace the sealed unit in a uPVC double glazed window:
  1. Using a rubber mallet and a strong pallet knife, remove the beading around the window. You might think they’re part of the frame, but they’re actually separate on the inside of the frame and can be taken out by using pallet knife to prize them out. Start with one of the longest beads first and leave the top bead until last.
  2. Give the glass a little tap to loosen it if it doesn’t come out straight away, then the whole unit should slide out easily. Just make sure it falls towards you and not back out onto the ground below!
  3. Clear any debris that has found its way into the frame with a brush. Add spacers at the bottom of the frame – these could be pieces of plastic.
  4. Get your new sealed unit (make sure you measure the glass before you buy one so you know which size to get) and carefully take it out of the packaging. Look for the British Standard mark – that shows you the bottom of the glass.
  5. Lift the glass into the frame, starting with the bottom first, and make sure that it fits square in the frame before taking the spacers out.
  6. Use a little washing up liquid to spread along the beads to make it easier when you slide them back into the frame. If they simply push and clip back in, you can use something like a block of wood to help you push them in correctly. Put them back in reverse order to how you took them out.
And there you go! If you’re feeling confident you can have a go at replacing the glass in your uPVC window yourself. But if you’ve got any worries, leave it to a window installer who will be able to do it in less than an hour.
How much is it to repair the glass in a window?
Accidents happen, and sometimes windows get broken. And that will lead to you wanting to replace just the glass in your window, rather than the whole frame. Also, as windows get older they can mist up on the inside, which means that the unit has ‘blown’ - so you’ll also need to replace the glass. But how much is it to replace the glass in a window? Luckily, if the frame of your window is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it, and this will reduce the cost. For an installer to fit a new pane of glass in a single glazed window, the average cost is £100, while a replacement double glazed sealed unit will cost an average of £110. Of course, as this is an average, if your window is very large you may spend more, and if your window is very small the price may be less. That's why it’s important to get a range of quotes so you can compare costs and get the best price. If you’re good at DIY, you may feel confident enough to have a go at replacing the glass in your window yourself. In that case, the cost of sealed unit and any other materials you need will cost an average of £57. It’s a significant saving, and if you think you can do it, then give it a try. However, if you’re in any way unsure, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. A window installer will be able to replace the glass in your window in less than an hour. Even though it costs more for a professional to do it, if you get it wrong and have to start over it will cost you more in the long run.
What to put over a broken window?
A broken window is a nuisance and an unwanted expense, and it can often happen at the worst times, like overnight when installers aren’t available or when the weather is very bad. So you might need to put something over your broken window as a temporary measure before someone can come and replace it – but what should you use? If you’ve got a small crack, you could try using some masking tape. Cover the entire crack with the tape making sure that there is extra tape at each end of the crack. This will help to prevent the crack from growing further. However, this isn’t going to work on large impact cracks or shattered windows. For a shattered window, you need to make sure you remove all the remaining glass as the shards could easily cut someone. To make a broken window like this safe, you’ll need:
  • Thick gloves
  • A hammer
  • A broom
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Thick-soled shoes
  • Safety goggles
  1. Put your gloves on and use the hammer to remove the rest of the glass. Make sure you hit the glass away from you.
  2. Using the broom, sweep away any loose glass from the area, making sure you do both inside and outside.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove any small pieces of glass that you might not have been able to see.
Once you’ve cleared up the mess, you’ll want to cover your broken window with plastic and tape. It’s only a temporary measure so make sure you get in touch with a professional as soon as possible. Cut some heavy-duty plastic to fit the entire window. Using duct tape, secure the plastic over the window and make sure all the sides are sealed properly. It’s best to ensure that the plastic stays taught over the frame so it doesn’t get caught by the wind. Make sure you get in touch with a glazier or window installer as soon as you can – you'll notice a draught very quickly and someone could easily come and rip the plastic off. If you’re very worried about this you might want to add a chipboard over the top to make it more secure.
