Bingley

Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford found in West Yorkshire, England. The town is positioned on the River Aire and also the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is situated in Airedale to the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a drop, having a population of roughly 19,884 in 2001 and decreasing to 18,294 as per the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is interpreted as 'Bing's Clearing' and finds its origins in Saxon. The town's first settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was created in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. A lot of the older history of the town continues to be present in the town, like the Bingley Grammar School, founded during the sixteenth century, which is believed to be 1 of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley has an abundance of local retailers, a street market, banks as well as the 'Little Theatre'. There are also effective transportation links in the town, with a railway station in the town centre as well as Leeds Bradford Airport nearby. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal navigate the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with tourists often watching barges navigating the locks. As a result of its largely unspoilt habitat, walking and biking in the town is popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. An annual music festival, Bingley Music Live, is hosted from Myrtle Park, offering a range of top quality music which attracts a considerable audience.
