Hoddesdon

Situated in the Lea Valley, Hoddesdon is a town in the Broxbourne borough of the English county of Hertfordshire. A part of Hoddesdon became an urban district due to the Local Government Act in 1894, with the remainder of the area ending up being the parish of Hoddesdon Rural in the Ware Rural District. Change occurred in 1937 after a County Review Order expanded the city district by adding the whole of the Hoddesdon Rural parish. This was in effect until the Local Government Act of 1972 came into effect in 1974, which ended the metropolitan district and created the District of Broxbourne. Starting from a coaching stop on the road in between London and Cambridge, it is 3 miles west of Harlow, 4 miles southeast of Hertford, 5 miles north of Waltham Cross and 11 miles southwest of Bishop's Stortford. Over 35 coaches travelled through the town each day at the town's peak. With a population of 20250, Hoddesdon is primarily a commuter belt town. The High Street is home to a number of national and regional shops, fast food restaurants and clubs, together with estate agents, charity shops, banks, travel agents and a library. Since the removal of the High Street's pedestrianised nature in 2009, the town has experienced a rise in popularity, leaving the empty shop numbers really low. Numerous brand-new independent businesses have also established themselves in the High Street. The lakes and water pits remaining after the decrease of gravel extraction in the 1970s are at present made use of as leisure amenities. The town is also home to a Non-League football club, Hoddesdon Town F.C., which is based at Lowfield.
