Horley

Horley is a town in Surrey that borders Surrey and West Sussex. It is south of the twin towns of Reigate and Redhill, and neighbouring Gatwick Airport and Crawley. The town is at an altitude of around 54 metres above sea level and covers 4.34 square miles. It has a population of 21232. The Horley Master Plan, passed by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in February 2005, enables the development of roughly 2600 brand-new houses. This will cover the Metropolitan Green Belt, which is allowed if the regional plan complies with national criteria, consisting of the capability to demonstrate environmental sustainability and keeping the character of localities. Due to frequent and quick train links to London from Horley Train Station, Horley qualifies as a commuter town. Two thirds of the working population commute to London or Crawley, with the remaining one third working locally. Horley has a substantial economy of its own, including the presence of business parks and a long high street containing commercial chain stores and independent companies. It was home to the Matbro works, which produced forklift trucks between the 1950s and the 1980s and founded telescopic handlers, which were incredibly popular with farmers and building business. A popular attraction is the Archway Theatre, located under the arches of the Victoria Road railway bridge; the theatre consists of a bar, an auditorium with a seat capacity of 95, and a studio theatre seating 40 people.
