Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth is a historic market town and well-known holiday resort in Ceredigion, West Wales. Residents often call it Aber, and it sits by the join of the rivers Ystwyth and Rheidol.
The University of Aberystwyth was established in 1872 and has had a vast student population ever since. At the 2001 census, 13,040 people lived in the town, not including the additional 10,000 students anticipated between September and June.
Although the name of the town implies that the River Ystwyth runs through Aberystwyth, it only borders it. Only the River Rheidol passes through the town.
Aberystwyth has a pier and a seafront that spans from Constitution Hill to the mouth of the harbour. Constitution Hill is a hill and walking area that has a funicular railway and a Victorian camera obscura at the top.
There is evidence that the site around Aberystwyth had settlers during the Mesolithic Age. Hunter-gatherers might have utlised the local flint to make weapons as the ice shrunk. There are also the remnants of a Celtic fortress on a hill overlooking Aberystwyth, meaning the site had settlers prior to 700AD.
