Pre-industrial Rhondda neighborhood was Welsh-speaking, and the Welsh language remained to be widely talked in the valley as well as in the top towns of the Rhondda till the mid-twentieth century. The original travelers to the Rhondda were from country Wales yet later a greater proportion originated from England. In 1901 64.4% of the population of the Rhondda Urban District were recorded as Welsh-speaking however this percentage was up to 56.6% by 1911. After being a community whose work relied nearly totally on coal mining in the Abergorki, Tylecoch, Parc and Dare collieries, by the end of the 1970s every one of these collieries had actually closed. Treorchy came to be a traveler town, with the working population looking for work in the bigger communities and also cities close by, such as Cardiff as well as Bridgend. Now work in Treorchy is mostly in retail.
