Pevensey
Pevensey is a village as well as civil parish in the Wealden area of East Sussex, England. The major town is located 5 miles (8 kilometres) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 kilometres) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay creates part of the parish. It was below that William the Conqueror made the landing in his intrusion of England in 1066 after going across the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the community was given an imperial charter by King John and was governed by Pevensey Corporation. With the decline in the town's value by the 19th century, the Corporation was at some point dissolved in 1886 and the town shed its borough status. The records of the Corporation are kept in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a volunteer body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was formed to handle the building which had formerly come from the Corporation, most especially the Old Court House. Pevensey is now a village, with a parish council including twelve chosen councillors. Three councillors are elected to the Wealden Area Council to stand for Pevensey; the Member of Parliament is Hugh Merriman, that represents the Bexhill as well as Battle Constituency, of which Pevensey is component. Pevensey is likewise part of the selecting ward called Pevensey as well as Westham. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 9,467.
