Darvel or Dervel (population 3,361) is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is at the eastern end of the Irvine Valley and also is often described as "The Lang Toon" (English: the Long Town). The town's Latin adage, Non sibi sed cunctis, indicates "Not for ourselves, however, for others". Much of the path of both the old railway lines is still out there, although the rails have long since gone and several road bridges have been eliminated. There was a big viaduct to the east of the community, in the lea of Loudoun Hill, which brought the train line over the valley. This was however, destroyed in 1986, and also just the piers stay. The River Irvine moves through the community and when powered regional mills.
