The town was established just after the sale of land in 1881 to develop the Bexleyheath loop line in between Lewisham and Dartford. Now, the railway station runs trains between London Charing Cross, London Victoria or London Cannon Street, through Lewisham and Eltham towards the west and Dartford railway station towards the east. There are 12 trains per hour throughout the week; on Sundays, there are 4 trains every hour. The railway station was openedto stimulate the creation of houses. The Barnehurst Estate was constructed in 1926 which housed many people.
In addition to the railway station, Barnehurst is served by 5 buses, 1 of which goes to the well-liked Bluewater Shopping Centre. There are few purchasing or leisure opportunities inside the town, so people generally go to surrounding places utilising public transport links or the main roads.
