Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is located south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Reported as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town comes from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partially or fully encompassed by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and recognised history as a manufacturing and trading town. The town was given a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be held at the Manor of Elland and at 2 fairs throughout the year. The town soon came to be a prime area for wool production, and its decrease in the 20th century had a far-reaching impact on the population, with lots of mills being converted to residences, if they were not destroyed. Quarried near the town after the establishment of the canal, tough flagstones were transported cheaply around the country. Elland was the the home of the principal factory of the manufacturer of Gannex products and it is presently the the home of the Dobsons sweet factory, which produces a series of old-school kinds of boiled sweets.
