Leatherhead

Leatherhead is a town in Surrey, England on the right shore of the river Mole, and beside the adjoining built-up area of London. The town covers a total area of around 4.84 square miles. Its local district is Mole Valley. Records exist of the area from Anglo Saxon England. Just north-east of the midpoint of Surrey and at a junction of ancient north-- south and east-- west roads, components of the town have actually been a focal point for transportation throughout its history. A main early spur to this was the building and construction of the bridge over the seasonally accessible River Mole in the early medieval period. Later the Swan Hotel supplied 300 years of service to horse-drawn coaches. In the late 20th century the M25 motorway was established close by. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11316 people. The town has re-developed regularly through changing economic demands and planning. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mole Valley District Council made plans to modernise the town, with a new pedestrianised high street and a sizeable one-way system. It has a combined theatre and cinema. Leatherhead's numerous business premises produce lunchtime demand and its restaurants and theatre pull in people from all around Surrey. The undulating streetscape lends itself more to warm summertime evenings. The theatre (see listed below) is a cinema and has art exhibits. The bypass streets to the town centre close and feature yearly in the London-Surrey cycle classic which is ranked by the world's cycling federation.
