It was formed in 1965 when three smaller sized council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
The borough covers a total area of roughly 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark features a wide selection of housing, which includes council housing, like the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate plus the Heygate Estate to supply homes to low-income residents. The borough is residence to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism.
