Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated 10 miles to the south east of Glasgow city centre and 37 miles to the west of Edinburgh, in addition to being in close proximity to other towns such as Motherwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge. Since 1996, it's been a part of the Greater Glasgow metropolitan area. With a population of roughly 20,705, a report by the Halifax Building Society suggested that in the early part of 2005, the town was the UK's homebuying hot spot, witnessing a rise in home prices by 46%. This resulted in the average home price as being £105,698. It's suggested that the town dates back to the seventeenth century, which initially contained a row of quarry workers' houses belonging to Mr. Bell, the proprietor of a stone quarry in the south of the town. The development of Bellshill, nonetheless, mostly came about following the closure of the quarry at the start of the 19th century. Improvements have continued throughout the twentieth century. Recently, the Streetscape Project, a programme which aims to attain the town's renovation and to modernise the the town centre, took place between 2007 and 2010, which established a one way system around the main street making the area a lot more pedestrian-friendly. Since the middle of the 1980s, the town has been recognised specifically for creating respected and influential popular music, with bands including the Soup Dragons, BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub coming from the town. A Channel 4 television series, 'Sounds of the Suburbs', celebrated the music of the area, often referred to as the 'Bellshill Sound' or the 'Bellshill Beat'.
