Devizes
Devizes is a market town and civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire in England. Located on a hill at the east edge of the Vale of Pewsey, the town is located approximately 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles (18 kilometres) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. Based upon the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11715. Its development has actually occurred around the 11th century Norman castle. Throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans and traders formed companies to serve the citizens of the castle. The first documented market in Devizes goes back to 1228. The original market was in the large area outside St Mary's Church, rather than in the current Market Place, which back then would have been within the castle's outer bailey. Devizes in the present day functions as a centre for banks, lawyers and stores and has an open market place where a market is held once a week on Thursdays. It has about five hundred listed buildings, which is a large number for a town of its size, and some significant churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. The town attracts a respectable volume of tourism as a result of its adjacency to Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Regional destinations include things like Wiltshire Museum, Caen Hill Locks, the Kennet and Avon Canal, seasonal crop circles, and the White Horse. The Wadworth Brewery, with its shire horses that provide Wadworth beer to clubs in the area along with giving rides to the public, operates a visitor centre.
