Hoddesdon
Positioned in the Lea Valley, Hoddesdon is a town in the Broxbourne borough of the English county of Hertfordshire. A section of Hoddesdon became an urban district because of the Local Government Act in 1894, with the rest of the area ending up being the parish of Hoddesdon Rural in the Ware Rural District. Modification happened in 1937 after a County Review Order expanded the urban district by adding the whole of the Hoddesdon Rural parish. This stayed in place until the Local Government Act of 1972 came into effect in 1974, which erased the city district and formed the Borough of Broxbourne. Originating from a coaching stop on the road in between London and Cambridge, it is 3 miles west of Harlow, 4 miles southeast of Hertford, 5 miles north of Waltham Cross and 11 miles southwest of Bishop's Stortford. Over 35 coaches travelled through the town every day at the town's peak. With a population of 20250, Hoddesdon is primarily a commuter belt town. The High Street is the home of a variety of nationwide and regional shops, fast food restaurants and bars, together with estate agents, charity shops, banks, travel agents and a library. After the removal of the High Street's pedestrianised nature in 2009, the town has experienced a rise in appeal, leaving the empty shop numbers very low. A number of brand-new independent businesses have actually also established themselves in the High Street. The lakes and water pits remaining after the drop-off of gravel extraction in the 1970s are currently made use of as leisure facilities. The town is also home to a Non-League football club, Hoddesdon Town F.C., which is based at Lowfield.
