It was formerly the site of a Roman fort and it became a medieval walled town in the Welsh Marches. Abergavenny also holds the remains of a medieval stone castle built after the Norman conquest of Wales.
The town is often called 'the Gateway to Wales'. It lies at the confluence of the tributary stream Gavenny and the River Usk. It is enclosed by the mountains Blorenge and Sugar Loaf, and five hills. There is access to the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park through Abergavenny.
