Maesteg is a town and community in the ceremonial county of Mid Gamorgan and in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. It lies at the north end of the Llynfi Valley, near the border with Neath Port Talbot. Much like the rest of Wales, the English and Welsh languages constitute the town's official languages. Although a significant percentage of inhabitants are natural English speakers, there is a small area of the community that speak Welsh. Of the 20612 inhabitants documented in the 2011 Census, 11 per cent of the town's population speak Welsh. There are notable variations between age groups, with 27.9 percent of 3 to 15 year olds speaking Welsh, 8.6 percent of 16 to 64 year olds, and the smallest proportion being among the over 65s at 5.3 per cent. The opening of ironworks in the 1820s and 1830s induced the development of the town. Between 1890 and 1925, Maesteg held a worldwide track record as a supplier of Admiralty-grade steam coal, high quality cooking coal and the leading house coal in South Wales. By the early 1920s, 7000 miners operated in the town. With the decline of the coal market and the closure of the last pit in 1985, the town is now characterised as being more residential and domiciliary in nature, largely for the Port Talbot, Bridgend and Cardiff journey to work areas. Founded in 1881, Maesteg Market continues to be a well-attended market, which is located on the ground floor of Maesteg Town Hall and a vast array of goods are offered. The town is additionally acknowledged for its strong music and singing tradition, being the home of different choirs and bands. Removing oil from block paving can be tricky, and a professional clean and re-point is often the best option. However, for small stains, especially recent ones, it’s worth attempting to clean it yourself. To do this, you can purchase oil remover or driveway cleaning solutions – although be careful, as some may stain or mark certain kinds of paving stones. In general, stay away from acid based cleaners.
Oil stains on your concrete driveway can look obvious and unsightly. However, there are several different ways to remove them.
If you’ve only just spilled the oil, you can use a mixture of absorbent material, like sawdust, and solvent, like acetone or lacquer. Combine these, place them on the stain, cover and leave for about 24 hours. Then sweep up the mixture and rinse the area with water.
If you’ve got a small, older stain, you can use a detergent like baking soda, vinegar, washing up liquid or laundry detergent. Cover the stain with the detergent and leave for about 30 minutes. Then, add hot water and scrub the area and rinse. You might need to repeat this if necessary.
If it’s a larger, more stubborn stain, you might need to use a special degreaser. You can use this similarly to a detergent but make sure you follow the instruction on the bottle carefully.
Cleaning block paving is a fairly straightforward task, although you’ll want to be careful to not use any chemicals that may cause damage to the surface. Use a simple household soap, mixed with water, and brush this across the paving with a stiff brush. Then, simply rinse off with clean water. Alternatively, use a pressure washer – but be careful not to use it on a powerful setting, as this may damage the joints and can cause slabs to come loose. Using the pressure washer on a medium setting and at a 45 degree angle is recommended.
Patios use durable and hard wearing materials which will be able to withstand extreme weather. It’s important to consider the drainage of your patio, as heavy rain will need to drain away to an area that can absorb the water. A professional will be able to design and lay a patio to do this.
