Bellingham

Bellingham is an area in south east London, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Its neighbouring districts are Catford, Sydenham and Downham. The Ravensbourne River runs through the middle of Bellingham, and to the east and west it is bordered by railway lines running south from Catford.

The name Bellingham means ‘the water-meadow owned by Beora’s people’, and was the real name of the medieval manor in the region. The name was preserved by the farm in the region, Bellingham Railway Station and the Bellingham Estate. Various other historical names have already been preserved by the street titles of the estate, which are linked with King Alfred, who was thought to have already been god, the father of the manor of Lewisham, and were extracted from the true names of mills, houses and fields in the area.

Bellingham was farmland before Bellingham Estate was built, between 1920 and 1923. London City Council built about 2600 houses and flats during this time period. Bellingham Estate was one of many huge estates constructed by London City Council following the First World War to assist with slum clearance and reduce overcrowding. As there was lots of land available most of the dwellings constructed were two-story houses, and there was plenty of green, open space.

Today, Bellingham is a localised town centre. Its high street is Randlesdown Road, which includes a supermarket, a fitness center, hairdressers and multiple restaurants and food outlets. It has a sixth form college also, and a church and a library. Bellingham boasts many well-known former and present residents, like the singer/song-writer Kate Bush, the former Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, and the footballer Ian Wright.

FAQs

Will a new door fit my aperture?

Many doors are made to measure. If you require a non-standard door width, ask a professional door installation company to measure your aperture and manufacture a door to fit. It could be that a small amont of brickwork is needed to accomodate the new door.

What materials are available for doors?

Doors can be bought in a range of materials, such as wood, aluminium or uPVC. There are also more modern composite doors which use a variety of different materials for toughness and durability. Doors are also available in glass reinforced plastic (GRP), and engineered timber.

Can I replace my front door without replacing the frame?

It is possible to replace a door without replacing the frame. However, most people choose to replace both their door and frame at the same time, as this is likely to make your home security and energy efficiency better, particularly if your existing front door is very old or the frame is distorted.

how to fit a upvc door?

In the past traditional door were usually made from wood and they’re normally good enough at doing the job they were required to do. However, with the advent of far more effective door building materials such as the affordable composites and UPVC, wooden doors are no longer in vogue. Being strong enough to provide the required security for home, low maintenance requirement as well as offering a strong seal and great insulating qualities, both UPVC and composite doors are among the most poplar options available in the market today. So if you’re looking to install a UPVC door in your home or property, you’d probably be wondering how to go about the task. Well, you’ve come to the right place! We’d recommend you hire the services of a professional door installer who can guarantee the best results especially if you lack proper training and experience to complete the job. In this guide, however, you’ll given a good insight into the UPVC door installation process.

• Take the measurement of the entrance to ensure the new door is the right size.

• Remove the old frame and wipe out any old mortar, sealant and any other debris.

• Resting the sill on the brickwork, make use of packers and spirit level to put the new frame in place. Check that the frame is placed the right way with drainage holes at the bottom and also level.

• Once the frame has been successfully put in place, the next line of action is to secure it. To do this, simply drill a hole through the frame. Use a masonry drill through the pilot hole and into the brickwork and ensure a tight fit with the help of packers, then put the anchor into place. Once done, make use of the fixing screw to secure the frame.

• Upon completion, you then have to put the door into place. Make sure the door is toed and heeled so as to avoid unnecessary issues in the future.
