Horley

Horley is a town in Surrey that surrounds Surrey and West Sussex. It is south of the twin towns of Reigate and Redhill, and neighbouring Gatwick Airport and Crawley. The town is at an altitude of around 54 metres above sea level and encompasses 4.34 square miles. It has a population of 21232. The Horley Master Plan, passed by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in February 2005, permits the building and construction of practically 2600 brand-new houses. This will cover the Metropolitan Green Belt, which is permitted if the regional plan measures up to nationwide criteria, including the capability to show environmental sustainability and sustaining the character of localities. Owing to regular and fast train connections to London from Horley Railway Station, Horley qualifies as a commuter town. Two thirds of the working population commute to London or Crawley, with the remaining one third working regionally. Horley has a significant economy of its own, consisting of the presence of business parks and a long high street including commercial chain stores and independent organisations. It was the home of the Matbro works, which produced forklift trucks between the 1950s and the 1980s and founded telescopic handlers, which were extremely popular with farmers and development business. A popular tourist attraction is the Archway Theatre, found under the arches of the Victoria Road railway bridge; the theatre features a bar, an auditorium with a seat capacity of 95, and a studio theatre seating 40 people.
