The towns have always been in different counties, separated by the Kelly Burn. Wemyss Bay is the port for ferryboats on the Sea Road to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute. Passengers from the island can connect to Glasgow by trains, which end in the town at the amazing Wemyss Bay train station, noted for its building high qualities and also considered as among Scotland's finest train buildings. The port is really revealed, so in high winds the ferries should take a trip up river to Gourock to dock.
