It is located 4 miles south-southwest of Guildford, crossing the banks of the River Wey in a tightly wooded and hilly area of the outer London commuter belt, and the Greensand Ridge. The town is 30.5 miles southwest of London, and is a part of a three-way twinning setup with the French town of Joigny and Mayen in Germany, along with having an association link with the state of Georgia. James Oglethorpe of Godalming started the colony of Georgia.
