Lee-on-the-solent

Lee-on-the-Solent is a modest seaside district in the Borough of Gosport in the English county of Hampshire. Located on the coast of the Solent separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight, it is approximately 5 miles from Portsmouth. The district obtained its name in the 19th century, at a time of proposals being made to establish the location as a prominent seaside retreat. Physical adjustments to the area additionally occurred during this time, with the development of Mine Parade, a pier, a train connection and multiple popular red brick villas all happening in the time between 1884 and 1894. The train service was stopped in the 1930s, and the damage to the pier as a result of the Second World War caused its demolition in 1958. While predominantly a residential area, having a population of around 20000, it continues to witness a surge of travellers and visitors over the summer months. The district equally continues to have a vibrant shopping centre, offering a vast variety of independent and commercial chain stores and restaurants. The closure of the railway cleared the coastal cliffs, allowing for walking and leisure activities. An enticing characteristic of Lee is the constantly changing views out to sea from the cliffs. Observable from the grassy banks are large container ships, cruise ships moving into Southampton and Portsmouth and the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Lee is known most particularly for being the home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. Regardless of its closure in 1966, it remains active as a civil airfield.
