Burglar alarms come in many different variations. Some, such as bell-only alarms, simply ring when it detects an potential burglar. These are the most popular but rely on someone hearing the alarm and taking action for the intruder to be caught. However, if you live in a low crime area, it may be worth saving the cost of a monitored system, as just the presence of a burglar is typically enough to deter an intruder. If this does not seem like enough peace of mind, a dialler burglar alarm can be a suitable alternative. If this goes off, not only will the alarm sound, but you or a family member will be notified. Additional detectors can also be used to detect floods or fires. However, if none of your nominated callers are available, or you have too weak a signal, then the system is not better than a bell-only alarm. For increased security, smart-home systems can be added. These send updates via an app to the user’s smartphone. Though highly customisable and secure, these are very expensive. Also, as with the dialler system, it will not work properly without a strong connection. If signal is likely to be an issue, then a burglar alarm monitoring contract can be taken out. This will either contact the police, or a nominated keyholder, if there is a break-in. If neither can be reached, the company itself will come to check the property. Though the most secure of all the systems, it is also the most expensive. Then, there is a choice between wired or wireless alarms. Wireless systems use battery powered sensors to communicate with the main panel, and arguably are more visually pleasing. However, this comes at a cost, as these systems are normally more expensive and batteries are needed for all components.

Broughton-in-furness

Broughton-in-Furness is a modest market town on the southern border of England's Lake District National Park. It is situated inside the Furness region of Cumbria, which was part of Lancashire just before 1974. It situated close to the River Duddon, just inland from the coastal hamlet of Foxfield. Broughton is named in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of the townships which formed the Manor of Hougun held by Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria. Dating from about the eleventh century, the original settlement grew into the local market town for fishing and agriculture, and now plays host to a frequent farmers cattle market. The central obelisk inside the town square was constructed to mark the Jubilee of King George III in 1810. In 1859, the Coniston branch of the Furness Railway, which passed through the town, opened. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1958, the line was closed down and dismantled, and the old line now serves as a public bridleway. The nearest railway station to Broughton is now Foxfield railway station, 2 miles (3.2 km) to the south west of the town. The creation of the National Park in the 1950s attracted some tourism to Brougton-in-Furness, although many tourists head further north or east towards the central lakes. In the 1990s, the A595 road was diverted in an effort to improve the environment of the town and help it retain its rural aesthetic. The town consists of, amongst other shops, a Post Office, a newsagents, a grocer, a butcher, a bakery as well as a number of pubs and restaurants. There is a Tourist Information Centre situated within the main square. FAQs

How do home security alarms work?

Home security alarms discharge their duties following a simple concept - ensuring all entry points into the building are secured. This is done through the placement of sensors at all possible points of entry. These sensors, in turn, detects all possible breach in security and relays the information to either the control panel or the command centre situated somewhere in the building.

The usual spots where the sensors are installed includes the doors, windows (especially the easily accessible ones at the ground level) and any other possible entrance into and from a house. Meanwhile, motion sensors can also be incorporated to secure the open spaces inside the home.

Here are the important components of a home security alarm:

• The Control Panel. This basically controls the entire security system. It can activate or deactivate the alarm by communicating with all installed components. In the event whereby there is an intrusion, it automatically triggers the alarm and raises the awareness of an alarm monitoring company. It normally comes with a touchpad which allows for easy interaction and settings to activate/deactivate the alarm system. The control panel can also operate on voice commands and can be set to work using key fobs (also known as wireless remote controls).

• Door & Window Sensors. These comprises two parts which are to be placed in adjacent positions to each other - on the door/window and the door frame or window sill to generate a security circuit when the door/window is shut.

• Motion Sensors. These sensors are used to protect an open space which cannot be breached without the alarm going off.

• Surveillance Cameras. Think of them as the ‘eyes’ monitoring the secured zone. They come in both wired and wireless configurations and can be remotely accessed on Smartphones, Tablets and PCs.

• High-Decibel Alarm. Alarms often serve two great functions. They are often loud enough to alert both occupants and nearby neighbours, but also shrill enough to send the intruder running.

• Yard Sign & Window Stickers. They may actually act as a marketing medium for alarm companies, but they are also sending an indirect message to potential intruders telling them to reconsider their intended illegal activity as the property is professionally protected.
