Elland
Elland is a market town in Calderdale, in the English county of West Yorkshire. It lies south of Halifax, near the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Documented as 'Elant' in the Domesday Book of 1086, the name of the town derives from the Old English term meaning 'land by the water, river or land partly or wholly surrounded by water'. At the time of the 2011 Census, Elland had a permanent population of 11676. Elland has a long and recognised history as a production and trading town. The town was given a charter to have a market on Tuesdays in the 14th century, to be held at the Manor of Elland and at 2 fairs over the course of the year. The town swiftly emerged as a prime location for wool production, and its decline in the 20th century had a profound effect on the population, with a large number of mills being converted to houses, if they were not knocked down. Quarried near to the town after the establishment of the canal, long lasting flagstones were brought cheaply throughout the country. Elland was the the home of the main factory of the manufacturer of Gannex products and it is currently the home to the Dobsons sweet factory, which makes a variety of traditional kinds of boiled candies. Suma Wholefoods has been based in the town since 2001, which is the largest worker's co-operative. A number of landmarks are also found in the region, featuring St. Mary the Virgin parish church, the Old Town Hall and Southgate Methodist Church. For all of your home upgrades, make certain to make use of dependable contractors in Elland to make certain of quality.
