Devizes
Devizes is a market town and civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire in England. Situated on a hill at the east edge of the Vale of Pewsey, the town is roughly 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles (18 km) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. Based upon the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 11715. Its growth has happened around the 11th century Norman castle. During the course of the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans and traders established services to serve the residents of the castle. The very first recorded market in Devizes dates back to 1228. The original market was in the large area outside St Mary's Church, rather than in the present-day Market Place, which back then would have been within the castle's outer bailey. Devizes in the present day serves as a centre for banks, solicitors and stores and has an open market place where a market is held once a week on Thursdays. It has approximately five hundred listed buildings, which is a a great deal for a town of its size, and some distinctive churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. The town brings in a respectable volume of tourism as a result of its proximity to Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Local attractions include Wiltshire Museum, Caen Hill Locks, the Kennet and Avon Canal, seasonal crop circles, and the White Horse. The Wadworth Brewery, with its shire horses that deliver Wadworth beer to bars in the area together with offering rides to the general public, runs a visitor centre.
