Devizes
Devizes is a market town and civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire in England. Situated on a hill at the east side of the Vale of Pewsey, the town is approximately 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles (18 kilometres) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of about 11715. Its development has happened around the 11th century Norman castle. During the course of the 12th and 13th centuries, artisans and traders formed services to serve the locals of the castle. The first recorded market in Devizes dates back to 1228. The original market was in the large area outside St Mary's Church, rather than in the present Market Place, which during that time would have been inside the castle's outer bailey. Devizes in the present day acts as a centre for banks, lawyers and stores and has an open market place where a market is held once a week on Thursdays. It has almost 5 hundred listed buildings, which is a a great deal for a town of its size, and some significant churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. The town attracts a fair volume of tourism as a result of its proximity to Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Local interests feature Wiltshire Museum, Caen Hill Locks, the Kennet and Avon Canal, seasonal crop circles, and the White Horse. The Wadworth Brewery, with its shire horses that deliver Wadworth beer to pubs in the area together with offering rides to the general public, operates a visitor centre.
