Soffits & Fascias in Ballater

Fascias and soffits are an important part of many guttering systems. Not only do they offer support for the guttering itself, they improve the design of your building by creating a clean and neat finish to the roofline. Fascias or fascia boards are horizontal boards that sit on the edge of the rafters of your roof, closing the end of the roof and creating the support that the guttering is fastened to. Soffits run under the fascia boards, closing the gap and protecting the underside of the rafter ends. Soffits are generally ventilated to make it possible for the roof timbers to breathe and also to prevent any moisture accumulation. Box ends are used where the horizontal fascia meets the diagonal barge board that runs up the edge of the roof profile, offering a neat finish to an otherwise ugly join.

Fascias and soffits are generally produced from either wood or UPVC. Timber fascias and soffits are common on older properties and remain popular. However, wooden fascias and soffits can rot over time and expose the rest of the guttering to issues or leaks. More recently, UPVC fascias and soffits have been increasingly popular as they offer a resilient choice that will not rot. UPVC fascias and soffits are available in a wide range of colours to suit any building, although white is extremely popular as it has a traditional aesthetic. Fascias are additionally available in ogee moulded designs, where feature grooves are incorporated. These can have an attractive effect.

Ballater

Ballater is a burgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on the River Dee, instantly east of the Cairngorm Mountains. Located at an altitude of 213 m (700 feet), Ballater is a centre for walkers as well as known for its sparkling water, once stated to cure scrofula. It is house to more than 1500 occupants. The medieval pattern of growth along this reach of the River Dee was influenced by the old trackways throughout the Grampian Mounth, which determined strategic locations of castles and various other Deeside negotiations of the Middle Ages. In the early 14th century, the location belonged to the estates of the Knights of St John, but the negotiation did not create until around 1770; first as a health facility turn to fit visitors to the Pananich Mineral Well, after that later upon the arrival of the railway in 1866 it was seen by numerous visitors capitalizing on the easier accessibility therefore afforded. Ballater train station was closed in 1966 yet continues to be in use as a site visitor centre with an event videotaping the town's royal connection. Numerous buildings date from the Victorian era and the centre of the village is a conservation area. The old site visitor centre was substantially harmed by fire in May 2015 yet has consequently been restored as well as resumed.

FAQs

When should I replace my soffits and fascias?

You should replace your soffits and fascias if you are having problems. Soffits and fascias can degrade and rot away over time, and this can cause leaks, faulty guttering, or even allow pests entry to the roof space. If any of these problems occur, you should speak to an experienced roofline company to discuss replacing your soffits and fascias.

Which material is best for soffits and fascias?

In general uPVC is used for soffits and fascias as it is very strong and durable. It also requires very little maintenance. However, wood can be used and is still popular on listed properties as it retains the original material. Older and listed buildings may require more traditional materials to be used.

Should I fit vented soffits?

Having ventilation in the roof void is a requirement for building regulations approval. Fitting ventilated soffits is the typical way that this roof ventilation is achieved. If you do not have roof ventilation, you may find that your roof void has problems with condensation or overheating.

What colour should soffits and fascias be?

Soffits and fascias are available in lots of different colours. These include black, grey, brown, white and cream. It’s also possible to get them in brighter colours like reds, blues and greens.

What colour soffits and fascias you get is entirely up to you, unless you live in a listed building, in which case some rules may apply. Most people choose a colour that matches their roof, walls or window frames to give their property an attractive, colour-coordinated look.
