Lairg
Lairg is a village and parish in Sutherland, Scotland. It has a population of 891 and is at the south-eastern end of Loch Shin. Lairg is uncommon in the north Highlands, if not unique, in being a large settlement that is not on the coastline. Among the factors that Lairg is slightly larger than other non-coastal Highland villages is its main place within the county of Sutherland. Having 4 roadways which meet in the town, it used to be known as "The Crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, it was offered with a train station, on what is currently the Far North Line. This advancement means that the north-west of Sutherland is currently less complicated to get to. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso as well as Wick in the north.).
