Lairg is uncommon in the north Highlands, if not unique, in being a huge negotiation that is out the coastline. One of the factors that Lairg is somewhat larger than other non-coastal Highland villages is its main place within the county of Sutherland. Having four roadways which fulfill in the town, it used to be known as "The Crossroads of the North". In the 19th century, it was supplied with a railway station, on what is now the Far North Line. This development means that the north-west of Sutherland is now simpler to reach. (The Far North Line links Inverness in the south with Thurso as well as Wick in the north.).
