Lee-on-the-solent
Lee-on-the-Solent is a modest seaside district in the Borough of Gosport in the English county of Hampshire. Set on the coast of the Solent dividing mainland England from the Isle of Wight, it is roughly 5 miles from Portsmouth. The district got its name in the 19th century, at a time of plans being made to develop the area as a popular seaside retreat. Physical adjustments to the region additionally took place throughout this time, with the development of Mine Parade, a pier, a railway connection and a number of prominent red brick rental properties all happening in the time frame between 1884 and 1894. The train service was suspended in the 1930s, and the damage to the pier as a result of the Second World War led to its demolition in 1958. Though primarily a residential region, having a population of around 20000, it continues to witness a surge of tourists and visitors over the summer months. The district equally continues to have a lively shopping centre, providing a large range of independent and commercial chain shops and eateries. The closure of the train line cleared the coastal cliffs, allowing walking and leisure activities. An attractive quality of Lee is the constantly altering views out to sea from the cliffs. Observable from the grassy banks are large container ships, cruise ships moving into Southampton and Portsmouth and the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Lee is known most notably for being the home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. Regardless of its closure in 1966, it remains active as a civil airfield.
