Lee-on-the-solent
Lee-on-the-Solent is a modest seaside district in the Borough of Gosport in the English county of Hampshire. Set on the coast of the Solent separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight, it is around 5 miles from Portsmouth. The district acquired its name in the 19th century, at a time of proposals being made to establish the area as a popular seaside resort. Physical changes to the area also occurred throughout this time, with the development of Mine Parade, a pier, a train connection and several prominent red brick rental properties all occurring in the time frame between 1884 and 1894. The train service was stopped in the 1930s, and the damage to the pier following the Second World War caused its demolition in 1958. Though primarily a residential region, having a population of around 20000, it continues to witness a surge of travellers and visitors over the summertime. The district similarly continues to have a vibrant shopping centre, providing a vast range of independent and commercial chain stores and eateries. The closure of the rail line cleared the coastal cliffs, enabling for walking and leisure activities. An appealing attribute of Lee is the continuously altering views out to sea from the cliffs. Observable from the grassy banks are large container ships, cruise ships moving into Southampton and Portsmouth and the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. Lee is known most particularly for being the home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. Regardless of its closure in 1966, it remains active as a civil airfield.
