Helensburgh

The town of Helensburgh is in Argyll and Bute in Scotland. It sits on the north shore of the Firth of Clyde and the eastern coast of the passageway to the Gareloch. Although historically in the Dumbarton District, it was re-allocated under the local government reorganisation that happened in 1996. Up until 1975, it was an area in former Dunbartonshire. Referring to the 2001 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 14626. Helensburgh was formed in 1776 primarily due to the construction of health spa baths on the site of Ardencaple Castle, which went back to about 1600, by Sir James Colquhoun of Luss. Right after its development, a seaside resort town was built on the east of the spa in the style of Edinburgh New Town, which was named after his spouse Helen. A ferryboat service ran across the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, which efficiently and successfully drew in citizens who could commute from jobs there. With time, the town became a favourite place of residence for shipping magnates and tobacco merchants from Glasgow. The success of the town is demonstrated by the fact that at one point in the 18th century, the town was the home of one quarter of Britain's millionaires. In the present day, the town is largely a commuter town for Glasgow. It also acts as a main shopping centre for surrounding areas, and travelers continue to be drawn in to the seaside resort. The seafront includes an indoor pool, an esplanade walk, and a variety of shops, cafés and clubs.
