It is a quiet town with little greater than 500 houses, two stores, and 2 clubs. Pencader's background returns a long way. For years, it was one of the main stops on the Carmarthen - Aberystwyth rail route, and also was the junction for the service to Newcastle Emlyn; the Pencader Tunnel enabled solutions to reach Carmathen using Llanpumsaint. The decrease of the railways saw the Newcastle Emlyn branch line enclosed 1952 as well as the main line near travelers in 1965.
