St Columb Major is a community and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Frequently described locally as St Columb, it is roughly seven miles (11 kilometres) southwest of Wadebridge and 6 miles (10 kilometres) eastern of Newquay. The designation Major differentiates it from the neighboring settlement as well as church of St Columb Minor on the coast. An electoral ward simply called St Columb exists with a population at the 2011 census of 5,050. Twice a year the community plays host to "tossing", a middle ages video game when typical throughout Cornwall and now just played in St Columb and also St Ives. It is played on Shrove Tuesday and afterwards once again on the Saturday eleven days later. The game includes two groups of several hundred people (the 'townsmen' and also the 'compatriots') that endeavour to lug a silver sphere constructed from apple timber to objectives established two miles (3 km) apart, making the parish, around 25 square miles (65 km2) in location, the de facto largest sports ground on the planet.
