Stump grinding describes the process where the stump of a previously felled tree is removed. Typically after tree felling a couple of inches of the trunk and the root system are left in the ground, making the neighbouring space impractical to use in addition to possibly appealing to pests or harbouring tree diseases like honey fungus. If your garden has stumps in the ground, having them extracted can clear the area, presenting you with more space that you could use to increase your lawn size or add fresh areas to fit patio or decking. Experienced stump grinding companies can remove stumps of any proportion.

The method ordinarily comprises trimming the stump as low to the ground as possible using a chainsaw, and then using specialised stump grinding machinery to grind away at the stump. Stumps are ground down to about 10-12 inches under the soil surface to allow for planting, although sometimes landscaping projects might need the stump to be removed deeper than this. The wood chipping that is generated by the stump grinding may be either infilled back into the hole and used as compost for other areas of your garden, or the stump grinding company can remove it for you and dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Also, numerous expert stump grinding companies offer specialist thin machines that can be used if there is limited access to your garden for example, through a side alley.
